Artist statement
I work in ink and acrylic, layering the smallest marks I can make like dots, dashes, stitches, rings, and stars, repeated until they stop being separate marks and start being a cohesive statement. Each painting is built slowly, one gesture at a time, in a rather meditative process closer to sewing or transcription than to sketching. Up close the dots are just patterns but viewed from a distance and when inscribed on top of other paint or ink they have movement and contrast.
The titles, like the pieces, are somewhat random, and come together as whatever felt right in the moment. Some of them are silly, more akin to things that sound like they might have been overheard, misheard, or said to me at odd moments, saved until a painting turns out to have been about them all along. I think of the dots and marks as a record of intuitive attention, and the titles as a record of levity and whimsy. The finished pieces are where the two meet.
